Sewer inspections are ongoing
From August 7 to 21, 2012, E2 Consulting Engineers will be smoke testing certain sanitary sewer lines within the City of Piedmont. A map of the affected streets and sub-basins is linked below. The City warns:
If a home has a bathroom, plumbing fixture, or basement floor drain that is not used or is seldom used, traps should be filled by running water in the fixtures the day before scheduled smoke testing and on a monthly basis thereafter in order to prevent sewer gas from entering the home or office.
The testing is part of an ongoing monitoring and inspection program which the City has initiated to ensure sewer lines are not subject to storm water infiltration. Testing will occur Tuesdays through Fridays between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. Notification will occur again one to two days before the test via door hangers that E2 employees will post as the work progresses.
These tests involve blowing harmless smoke into parts of the City sanitary sewer system to find damage, improper connections, and where unwanted storm water may be entering the City’s sanitary sewer system. As a result, smoke may be seen coming from roof vents, building foundations, catch basins, clean-outs, downspouts, broken sewer laterals or manhole covers. The smoke will not enter your home or business, if it is properly plumbed, vented, and the water traps contain water.

Onlookers create festive atmosphere along Piedmont streets –
A festive air prevailed as people waited along Piedmont streets to see President Obama and his entourage arrive on Monday, July 23. Motorcycles whizzed up and down Highland Avenue keeping pedestrians and cars off the street. Without notice of when the President would actually arrive, some people waited for over an hour to see the President. A tow truck removed the last remaining car on Highland Avenue, eventually all traffic was cleared and streets were blocked off to vehicles. On Sea View Avenue, the Piedmont Maintenance Department made four passes with the street sweeper.
A little after five o’clock, preceded by a motorcade, the President’s car came up Highland Avenue from Moraga Avenue. He was greeted by American flags, signs for Obama and Romney, and many onlookers. Through the thick car windows, the President could be seen waving to spectators. The President was scheduled to attend a fundraiser dinner at $35,800 per plate in the Piedmont home of Wayne Jordan and Quinn Delaney at 5:00 p.m.
On Sea View Avenue, the President’s car was greeted by neighbors who gave a cheer and clapped when it arrived. After President Obama spoke to about 60 donors at the dinner party, he departed on a slightly different route to Highland Avenue, followed by a train of white vans full of reporters. Once again, waving onlookers caught a glimpse of the President.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Department, City of Piedmont Police, Fire, and Public Works Departments, California Highway Patrol, Oakland Police Department, and the Secret Service, all played a role in providing a safe Piedmont visit for President Obama.

Some chair groups block crosswalks on June 30
Chairs Herald Piedmont’s Fourth of July Parade.
Since the last day of June, Highland Avenue has been lined with chairs of every sort and description. Chairs cover crosswalks and even a bus stop, as eager parade watchers place their chairs in the public right of way for front row seating. Some residents along Highland Avenue host a parade party.
Piedmont’s annual Fourth of July parade will flow down Highland Avenue from Park Way Avenue starting at 11:00 a.m.. Neighborhoods, musicians, antique cars, and organizations participate along with a yearly favorite, Piedmont’s own volunteer marching band. The parade terminates at the Main Park near the Excedra followed by music, food, and picnics in the park.
This photo shows chairs placed days before the parade in front of Wells Fargo Bank.
