OPINION: Measure A Proponents and Opponents Unified for School Funding
Opponents Support Progressive Tax and Senior Exemption to produce the same budget for the schools-
Piedmont’s Measure A election is unique in that both proponents and opponents want the same full funding for our schools. Opponents believe that the most expensive California school tax requires both a progressive structure and compassion for needy seniors.
We ask the School Board to keep its promise of putting before the voters a progressive tax as soon as possible; a tax structure based on square foot of dwelling and/or parcel meets this criteria. The old residential five tiered tax structure is sharply regressive and flat tax Measure A is even more so.
The next school tax should include a compassionate senior exemption based on Federal “very low income” guidelines as is used in our region. Such an exemption will cost the District less than the 2% escalator. Robust citizen oversight is needed. Such a tax will be heartily supported by the opponents of Measure A.
Our democratic system is best served by an honest process and good faith by all involved in Piedmont’s School tax dialogue.

Thanks for your efforts Rick. I don’t imagine many people like the numbers as much as you and I seem to, but I believe it helps everyone to have to think more about the implications of different choices.
I hope the courts or the Legislature gives us the chance to help the District design a parcel tax system everyone can support.
And a huge thanks to Piedmonters for supporting our schools!
