Sept 19 – LWV Advocacy Forum on Proposition 30
The following announcement was received from the Piedmont League of Women Voters on proposed state tax measure to help school funding-
An advocacy forum on Proposition 30 on the November ballot will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 7:30 – 9 p.m. at the Ellen Driscoll Theater, 325 Highland Avenue.
Proposition 30 is essential to preventing drastic state budget cuts to California public schools and colleges and other vital services. If Proposition 30 fails, Piedmont schools stand to lose $1.1 million — $441 per student — by January 2013, and California public schools and colleges overall face a total loss of $6 billion this year.
California public schools already rank 47th in per-student funding and have the largest class sizes in the nation. In the last 4 years alone, the state’s schools have been hit with $20 billion in cuts. Our students deserve better.
Featured speaker Damon Smith, Associate Superintendent, Alameda County Office of Education, brings a wealth of experience in state-wide school finance and will explain the ramifications of Proposition 30. Superintendent Constance Hubbard will report on the specific effects on Piedmont Schools. Proposition 38, a competing school funding ballot measure, will also be described.
A question and answer period will follow the presentations, and information will be provided on how citizens can support the campaign to fund public schools. The program is sponsored by the Piedmont League of Women Voters and is free and open to the public.
LWV California has endorsed Proposition 30 and has a neutral stand on Proposition 38.
