Deadlines Approach for February Election

Nomination papers for prospective candidates for City Council and School Board will be available from the City Clerk’s office at 120 Vista Avenue, Piedmont,  beginning Monday, October 17, 2011 and must be returned to the City Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 14, 2011.

In the case of the School Board, School Board member Martha Jones has announced she will not seek re-election, thereby extending the School Board nomination period to November 18.   An extension to November 18 would apply to the City Council candidate deadline if the incumbent eligible to run, Margaret Fujioka, does not file by November 14th, but she has already announced her candidacy.

Nomination papers include documents for the signatures of 20 registered voters and the candidate’s statement of no more than 200 words to be printed in the Voter Handbook.  Each candidate must be a registered voter in Piedmont.  The City Clerk, John Tulloch, will provide the necessary papers and information on the election process. Candidates must adhere to the election laws of California including financial disclosure of contributions and expenditures.

Public announcements have been made by three individuals for the two Piedmont City Council seats – Margaret Fujioka (incumbent),  Robert McBain, and Tim Rood.  Candidacy for the three seats on the Board of Education has been indicated by four individuals: Jon Elliot, Sarah Pearson,Richard Raushenbush (incumbent), and Andrea Swenson.

A proposed Special Municipal Sewer Surtax will also be on the February 2, 2012 ballot.

The last day for filing direct arguments for or against the Sewer Tax ballot measure is Friday, November 18, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. All arguments must be filed with the Piedmont City Clerk, 120 Vista Avenue, Piedmont, California.  The arguments cannot exceed 300 words in length.  The last day for filing rebuttal arguments for or against the ballot measure is Monday, November 28, 2011 at 4:00 p.m.  Rebuttal arguments cannot exceed 250 words in length.

Piedmont contracts with the Alameda County Registrar of Voters office for the conduct of elections, but the City Clerk assists candidates in filing election forms and is the official recipient of election reporting forms required by the Fair Political Practices Commission.
