Three knowledgeable panelists — State Senator Loni Hancock, Tony Smith, Superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District, and Ray Gadbois, board memberof the Piedmont Unified School District — will offer insights and perspectives on school budget challenges, from the state viewpoint down to how two diverse local school districts, Oakland and Piedmont, are deploying their financial resources.

What Piedmont Swim Club Has Agreed to:

1.  We have agreed to a 15 year lease, which gives the city two buy-out rights.  First, if the city builds a new pool facility, it can terminate the lease, provided it gives each member of the club at the time of termination a pass to use the new pool free for one year.  Second, after five years, the city has an annual right to terminate the lease, if it gives each then member of the club a one-year free pass to continue to use > Click to read more…

Vacancies on Piedmont’s commissions and committees offer an excellent opportunity for Piedmonters to get involved in Piedmont activities important to the ongoing success and quality of the City.  These citizen volunteer positions allow individuals to use their abilities on a wide range of subjects.  Being on a commission or committee engages a person in a high level of civic involvement.

Each commission has a special role in making decisions and advising the City Council.  A full term on a commission last for 3 years with a two term limit.  Positions without an incumbent are ready opportunities for new participants.

    • CIP (Capital Improvement Program) Review Committee – 1 Vacancy, 1 Incumbent
    • Civil Service Commission – 1 Vacancy, 1 Incumbent
    • Park Commission – 2 Vacancies, 0 Incumbents
    • Parking Hearing Officer – 2 Vacancies, 2 Incumbents
    • Planning Commission – 2 Vacancies, 0 Incumbents
    • Recreation Commission – 3 Vacancies, 1 Incumbent

Friday, February 4, is the deadline to submit an application for the Piedmont’s Municipal Tax Review Committee.  This committee reviews the financial situation of Piedmont and  makes a recommendation to the City Council on whether or not to ask voters to consider a parcel tax.  Serving on the committee allows citizens to become informed and involved in this important decision.  Find out more information here. The Moraga Canyon Sports Fields Complex (also known as Blair Park) is on a fast track for review by the City’s commissions.  According to the January 5 Minutes of the Park Commission, the project is on the agenda of both the Park Commission and the Planning Commission in February.  The Park Commission hearing was originally scheduled for February 2, but was rescheduled for February 17, 2011 at 5:30 pm in the City Hall after the story poles are erected.  The Planning Commission hearing is scheduled for February 24 at 6:30pm. > Click to read more…
